Hurricane Harvey Slams Texas with Flooding

Image
Until now, Texas had avoided hurricanes since 2008, when Ike hit as a Category 2 near Galveston. On August 25, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4. The heavy rains and massive storm surge have unleashed catastrophic flooding in Houston and other areas of the Texas Gulf Coast. Keep reading to learn more about what residents in Texas are currently experiencing. Hurricane Harvey's Impact  The National Hurricane Center called Harvey the biggest rainstorm on record, with rainfall potentially reaching 50 inches in some places. While evacuations were ordered for some areas along the coast, Houston was not issued a mandatory evacuation. According to the National Weather Service, more than two feet of rain fell in Houston within a 24-hour period. Authorities have scrambled to provide help as the storm flooded streets and homes. Due to the slow movement of the storm, flooding is expected to worsen. While the storm weakened after making landfall, it still had the powe...

Flooding and Global Warming

Image
If you've been following our blog for the past couple weeks, you know that we've been addressing the issue of global warming. When you think of global warming, flooding probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. However, global warming is partly to blame for the increase in major flooding events in the United States. Keep reading to learn how flooding and global warming may have more in common than you thought. Increased Heavy Rainfall Warmer air can hold more moisture. Therefore, due to global warming, heavier precipitation is expected in the years to come. As average temperatures across regions of the country increase, more rain has fallen during the heaviest downpours. Very heavy precipitation events, which is defined as the heaviest 1%, now drop 67% more precipitation in the Northeast, 31% more in the Midwest and 15% more in the Great Plains than they did 50 years ago. While single storms can't be attributed to global warming, the changing climate con...

The Impact of Global Warming on Our Planet

Image
We've experienced gradual global warming throughout Earth's 4.54 billion-year history. The Earth's average temperature has fluctuated significantly resulting in "Ice Ages" and "Interglacials." Today's global warming, however, is an unprecedented type of climate change. From changes in sea level along heavily populated coastlines to the worldwide retreat on glaciers, global warming is driving a cascade of side effects. These issues are likely to have a much greater impact on society than temperature change alone. The Effects of Global Warming  Whether you believe the increased effects of global warming are caused by humans or not, the phenomenon of excess heat building up in the Earth's atmosphere is occurring.  The importance and understanding of this is relation to our daily lives and economies is crucial. Sea levels are rising, we're experiencing an intensified water cycle and stress is being put on our plants and animals. People ...

The Difference Between Global Warming and Climate Change

Image
You've probably heard over the recent years how global warming and climate change are becoming more and more of an issue. What exactly do these terms mean though? Do we understand really what we're talking about and what this issue actually is? The media tends to use the two terms interchangeably, but they do refer to two different things. Keep reading to learn the basics of global warming and climate change, how they are different, but also related. The Earth's Climate The Earth's climate has undergone vast changes over the years, not only in weather changes, but also changes in water level, oceans, snow and ice. While natural factors are in play, various human activities have also contributed to these changes. These changes are vastly unpredictable and pose a threat to the entire ecosystem. Let's dive into what exactly global warming and climate change are: Global Warming  Global warming is the term used to describe the current increase in the Earth...
