Community Preparedness

Prepare for the next flood now

Many communities who believed they were prepared for flooding often find out after the water hits that they were not as prepared as they thought.  Community leaders are often overwhelmed by the scale of the flood and the impact on lives and property.  By the time state or federal relief efforts arrive, it's often too late to make a big difference in the relief effort.

There are some wonderful tools available to help community leaders prepare for the next flooding event.  One great resource can be found at http://www.ready.gov/community-preparedness-toolkit

"The Community Preparedness Toolkit provides step-by-step directions along with useful resources for making your community, safer, more resilient, and better prepared. The Community Preparedness Toolkit can be used to develop a community-based approach to preparedness, such as a Citizen Corps Council. Citizen Corps is FEMA's grassroots strategy to bring together government and community leaders to involve citizens in all-hazards emergency preparedness and resilience. Citizen Corps asks you to embrace the personal responsibility to be prepared; to get training in first aid and emergency skills; and to volunteer to support local emergency responders, disaster relief, and community safety."

Some Highlights of the Toolkit

  • Identify local partners
    • Find community groups like Citizen Corps Councils
    • Coordinate with local fire departments, police, emergency management agencies
    • Contact the Red Cross and other relief agencies

  • Build your team
    • Identify a disaster response team within your community
    • Get your team together regularly to plan
    • Set a training schedule as necessary

  • Set Goals
    • Training events per year
    • Disaster response events per year
    • Emergency supplies on hand

Consider pre-positioning Flood Control supplies

Communities should consider having adequate flood control supplies on hand before the wall of water comes at them.  Having the Big Bags USA flood barrier system available is the cheapest, most versatile and easily deploy-able solution out there.  Deployment is 200 times faster than sandbags and takes 2 man hours per 1000 ft of protection.  For every dollar spent on preparedness, saves your community 4 dollars in recovery.  Give us a call or visit our website to learn more!
