Prepare Your Community for the Rainy Winter Season

Don't wait to clean up after a flood hits, prepare now

Here at Big Bags USA, we're all about preparation.  Although we made it through hurricane season, the winter months can also bring rainy weather which increases the chances of a flood.  Tragedy and large expenses associated with flooding could be avoided if communities plan ahead.  Besides purchasing flood insurance, there are many things you can do to get yourself and your community ready for when disaster hits.  Here is a great resource we found at www.floodsmart.gov.  Check out their tips on flood preparation below:

1. Safeguard your possessions.

Find a secure place to store all of your important documents, such as a safe deposit box or waterproof lock-box.  In addition to your typical documents, be sure to have a copy of your insurance policies, finance records and receipts for any major purchases.  For insurance purposes, it is important to keep a household inventory in written and visual form.  All major household items and valuables should be accounted for, even the ones stored away.  Include serial numbers and store receipts for major appliances and electronics, and have jewelry and artwork appraised. This type of information is critically important when filing insurance claims. For more information visit www.knowyourstuff.org.

2. Prepare your house.

Start by making sure your sump pump is working. In case of a power failure, it would be good to install a battery-operated backup.  Installing a water alarm is a good way to monitor water accumulation in your basement.  Be sure to clear debris from gutters and downspouts, and anchor any fuel tanks.  Raise all of your electrical components such as switches, sockets and breakers, as well as placing your furnace, water heater, washer and dryer on cement blocks at least 12 inches above your homes projected flood elevation.  Finally move all of your furniture, valuables and important documents to a safe location.

3. Develop a family emergency plan.

Create a safety kit to have on hand that includes drinking water, canned food, a first aid kit, blankets, a radio and a flashlight.  Have emergency numbers posted by the telephone and if you have young children, make sure they know how to dial 911.  Plan and practice a flood evaluation route with your family and identify safe routes from work, home and school that are on higher ground.  Find someone out-of-state that can be your family emergency contact and have a plan to protect any pets that you may have.

Now take a look at the bigger picture.  Your personal property is now prepared for flooding, but what about your community?  Do they have an emergency plan?  Consider Big Bags USA for your community flood prevention.  Our flood barriers provide lightning fast flood protection at a fraction of the cost.
