Out with the Old and In with the New

Floods are the number one natural disaster in the United States. Total flood insurance claims averaged nearly $4 billion dollars per year from 2003 to 2012. If you've ever experienced a flood, you know that it's one of the most devastating forces of nature. For years, people have been using sandbags as a way to protect their belonging from the imminent waters.  Big Bags USA has a better solution! Traditional Sandbags Sandbags are the most common flood mitigation tool used, but they're not always effective in preventing flooding. Sandbag walls, when not constructed properly, can fail at a lower height than expected and water will eventually seep through. Using sandbags is a very labor intensive and time consuming strategy. From filling to hauling to placing, sandbagging can be back-breaking work and you often don't have time to do all this before a flood strikes. In addition, the sandbags can degrade prematurely from the sun and other elements. They will also becom...

Beware of Flooding Caused by Snowmelt

Image
As we move into the Winter season, new flooding risks arise. A midwinter thaw can produce large amounts of runoff in a short period of time. Since the ground is frozen and hard, water cannot penetrate the Earth and be reabsorbed. The water then has no where to go but into the lakes, streams and rivers. This excess run off water causes these bodies of water to spill over their banks. The effect of snowmelt on potential flooding is something that causes concern for many people across the country. Flood preparation is something to be thinking about as we head into this cold weather season! Massive Northeastern United States Flooding In January of 1996, the northeastern United States experienced massive flooding due to a combination of factors. Heavy snowfall followed by a sudden thaw and heavy rain caused floods along rivers from New York through Pennsylvania to Virginia. This produced water levels not seen since Hurricane Agnes, which hit the area in June 1972. Major rivers in Pe...

Protect Yourself During a Flood

Flood-related injuries and deaths most commonly involve being trapped in flood waters.  To avoid being trapped by rapid changes in water levels, you should always follow authorities' orders to evacuate low-lying areas or the likely path of rising waters.  If you find yourself in a flooding situation, follow these flood protection tips from FEMA : Evacuate  If authorities advise or order an evacuation, please do so immediately.  Be sure to remember the 5 P's of Evacuation: People, Prescriptions, Paper, Personal Needs and Priceless Items.  If you're in the path of a slow-onset flood and have extra time before you need to evacuate, consider the following tips:  Move any items you want to protect to a higher floor.  Turn off the gas, water and electricity if you know how and can do it safely.  Do not touch electrical equipment if it is already wet or you are standing in water.  Put Big Bags USA flood barriers around your property....

Removal of Big Bags USA Systems

Image
Clean-up is quick and easy with the Big Bags USA protective flood barrier system .  They can be emptied either on-site or lifted individually by forklift or pay loader.  The sandbags are dumped by placing individual sandbags into a pay-loader, lifting bucket 8-10 feet, tilting bucket forward until the sandbags turn upside down and falls top down. The sandbags can then either be lifted off the sand pile or will need the bucket to push or pull it to loosen the sandbags from the sand pile. The best part, our innovative flood barriers can be re-used! Removal of Systems and Resources When ready to dismantle Big Bags USA flood barriers, use the same equipment as in deployment with the addition of a front fork attachment (if applicable).  When Big Bags USA barriers are properly removed, they may be washed and stored for a later date.  Any sand that is NOT contaminated may be re-used as well.  There are two preferred methods of recovery recommended by DRIPS, LL...
