Big Bags USA educates Davenport, Iowa on flood protection!

The Big Bags USA team is back from a highly successful conference of the Great Lakes and Great Rivers chapters of the International Erosion Control Association in Davenport, Iowa.  During this conference, we were able to educate erosion control experts from several states including Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, & Michigan.

During the conference, Big Bags USA was asked to provide a live demonstration of a deployment of our flood control systems by city leaders of Davenport.  Here are some excerpts from coverage by the Quad City Times!

"As the Mississippi River is headed back over flood stage, a Missouri company offered a demo
nstration of a flood protection system that rivals the system used by the city of Davenport.

The demonstration by DRIPS LLC Big Bags USA, Osage Beach, Mo., came on the final day of a conference of the Great Lakes and Great Rivers Chapters of the International Erosion Control Association in Davenport.

DRIPS owner Tom Spalj said the Big Bags deploy faster than sandbags and Hesco barriers and conform to the topography, unlike the rigid Hesco barriers. Plus, the bags are impermeable so the sand can be reused

"They are a lot easier to deploy than sandbags," Spalj said, saying private companies have used them to protect grain processors and power substations.

The bags have wooden frames and are folded up in sections of five when stored. When they are deployed, they are pulled apart like an accordion. Once in place and easily connected, they can be filled with sand.

Clarke (Davenport Public Works Director) said Spalj's product is approved for use by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so he would consider using it. Clarke told Spalj he would invite a demonstration by Big Bags to protect Union Station if the river was forecast to 21 feet, but a river level like that may not occur for several years."

Preparation is the key to Flood Protection

Spalj is adamant about being proactive versus reactive. " If those ( municipalities, etc.)  having ground crews ready to go during the action stage of a flood event with our systems in stock, can easily take care of multiple locations at one time"

One 15 foot system replaces 750 sandbags with two men in 10 minutes or less. Uniquely, the systems are able to stay open for filling through use of machinery due in part to the u-frames located on the inside of each bag.

The cost comparison with other methods will show that the Big Bags USA systems end up being cheaper than conventional sandbags if stacking them past one foot tall.
