Many Americans Who Have Survived a Natural Disaster Still Aren't Prepared for the Next One

According to Government Security News, 92 percent of Americans have survived a natural disaster, but many may not be prepared for ones to come.  The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) made 95 major disaster and fire declarations last year.  In 2012. that number was 112 which included Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Isaac, as well as the High Park and Waldo Canyon wildfires. These numbers have nearly doubled from those reported only 2 decades ago.

Natural Disaster Survey Results

Despite this increase in natural disasters, a new survey released by Allstate shows that people may not be as prepared as they should be for the next big storm.  Check out these numbers of those Americans surveyed:

  • 92% have survived a natural disaster
  • 7% say they or someone in their family was injured when a disaster impacted their community
  • 90% have never practiced an evacuation plan
  • 64% have not created a household inventory list
  • 30% admitted that they would ignore evacuation orders in the face of an imminent natural disaster

Although the results from Allstate have progressed since the survey was conducted several years ago, these numbers show there is still a lot of work to be done for people to understand the importance of preparing for natural disasters to strike.

Emergency Preparation

FEMA states that preparation is a family's best defense.  There are a few simple steps to take before severe weather even starts.  It is important to discuss an evacuation plan and include a location to meet away from your home.  Be sure to prepare an emergency kit containing the following:

  • First-aid kit
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Water supply
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Weather radio
  • Flashlight

Also crucial is having an up-to-date home inventory.  An easy way to do this is to take pictures of each room and store them online.  There are free applications out there such as Digital Locker that allow you to keep your inventory organized and accessible from your smartphone, computer or anywhere you have an internet connection.
