September is National Preparedness Month!
Be Disaster Aware...Take Action to Prepare!
You never know when disaster will strike. September is National Preparedness Month and Big Bags USA is here to help you with taking action now! By increasing your knowledge of what to do during emergency situations, you can help in reducing the disaster's effects, including injury and loss of life, property damage, and financial loss.
How to Prepare for Natural Disasters
Knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency is a critical part of being prepared and can be the difference when seconds count. You can visit www.community.fema.gov for more information on how to prepare for different types of hazards. Here are some things to do in general to prepare for any type of natural disaster situation:
Know How to Stay Informed
- Monitor the weather reports provided by your local news media.
- Sign up for text or email alerts for emergency notifications, if available in your area.
Have an Evacuation Plan- Know your community’s local evacuation plan and identify several escape routes for your location if roads are blocked.
- If you will evacuate by car, keep your car fueled and in good condition. Keep emergency supplies and a change of clothes in your car.
- If you will need to use public transportation, including paratransit, contact your local government emergency management agency for information on how an evacuation will work.
- If you need to relocate for an extended period of time, identify a place away from home now where you could go if you had to leave. Consider family or friends who live outside of the local area.
- If you expect to go to a shelter after evacuating, download the American Red Cross Shelter Finder app.
Practice How to Communicate
- Remember that sending texts is often faster than making a phone call.
- Keep important numbers written down in your wallet not just in your phone.
- It is sometimes easier to reach people outside of your local area during an emergency, so choose an out-of-town contact for all family members to call or use social media.
Practice First Aid and Emergency Response
- Prepare for emergencies by taking American Red Cross Training Classes.
- The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may affect their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Store Supplies
- Take time now to make a list of the things you would need or want to take with you if you had to leave your home quickly.
- Store the basic emergency supplies in a “Go Bag” or other container. Be ready to grab other essential items quickly before leaving.
- For a full list of supplies for your emergency supply kit, visit: www.ready.gov/build-a-kit.
- Consider the 5 Ps of Evacuation: People, Prescriptions, Papers, Personal Needs and Priceless Items.
Discuss How Your Community Can Reduce Risk
- Work with others in your community to improve community resilience planning.
- For more information on mitigation options for reducing your community’s risk, visit www.fema.gov.
