Hurricane Season is Here!
June 1st marked the beginning of Hurricane Season. If you live anywhere near the coast, even inland, it is important to be prepared for extreme weather this time of year. We have already seen two tropical storms approach us this season and you never know when those types of storms can turn into a hurricane, or how strong the winds and flooding can be. Here are some tips from Travelers.com for you to start getting prepared today!
General Preparation Tips
Whether its just a hurricane watch or a hurricane warning, it is important to be prepared. What you do during the time leading up to a hurricane can determine how well you weather the storm and how easily you recover from it.
- Prepare a survival kit that includes water and non-perishable food for everyone, extra clothes, a portable radio, flashlights and batteries.
- Plan your evacuation route and leave as soon as an evacuation is ordered. Waiting is not a good idea as it is hard to predict exactly when and where the hurricane will hit.
- Create an inventory of all your personal belongings. If something happens to your home, you will need this information for the insurance claim.
- Close your storm shutters and board up all glass doors and windows.
- Secure any outdoor objects or just move them inside.
- Bring gas or charcoal grills inside, but do not use them indoors. Leave the propane chained up somewhere away from the house. You do not want it in the house or even the garage if it gets hit by a hurricane.
- If you have a boat, be sure to secure it or move it to a safer place.
- Fill your emergency generator fuel tank. Also, have some spare fuel on hand, stored in a safe place.
Water Damage Protection
Heavy rains associated with hurricanes and tropical storms can cause major flooding, leading to flood/water damage:
- Close and lock all windows and doors. If you have any window airconditioners, be sure to remove them.
- Remove valuable items from your basement of at least elevate them off the floor.
- Clear exterior drains and gutters of debris.
- Repair damaged gutters and downspouts; make sure water can drain away from your foundation.
- Check your sump pump and the battery backup to ensure they are in proper working condition.

Roof Damage Protection
Wind mixed with debris such as toppled trees can damage or even destroy roofs, siding and exterior walls.
- Remove any dead or dying trees that could possibly fall on the house.
- Cosider employing a contractor to properly:
- Install roof covering and plywood roof sheathing.
- Brace roof trusses.
- Install hurricane straps.
Tree Protection
With the powerful winds associated with hurricanes, trees can become very dangerous. Broken limbs, fallen trees or even uprooted shrubbery could damage your home or other property. Therefore, it is important to routinely maintain the trees around your home.
- Prune tree limbs within 10 feet of your home.
- Check for cracking or splitting in trees.
- Watch for limbs that don't have buds.
- Remove dead limbs and weakened trees.
Protecting Doors, Windows and Skylights
In addition to your roof, doors and windows are also highly vulnerable during a hurricane. When your home is exposed to high winds from a hurricane, roofs are most susceptible to damage, followed by the walls and opening such as skylights. Strengthen your doors and windows by:
- Installing reinforcing bolt kits at the top and bottom of doors.
- Reinforcing garage doors.
- Installing storm shutters over windows or board them up.
