What is El Niño?
Are you prepared for whatever El Niño throws at us this year? No matter where you live across the United States, you could be affected by this natural phenomenon. Big Bags USA® is here to help you understand how El Niño works and how you can better prepare for the weather changes that are to come.
El Niño is an irregularly occurring and complex series of climatic changes affecting the equatorial Pacific region and beyond every few years. It is characterized by the appearance of unusually warm, nutrient-poor water in the eastern Pacific Ocean along the equator. El Niño typically occurs in late December. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this year's El Niño could rival the strongest on record and is nearly certain to last into the Northern Hemisphere spring of 2016. The "Godzilla" El Niño of 2015-2016 is expected to be one of the strongest on record, having large consequences on global weather. Not all of El Niño's impacts are monstrous, with some even being positive, but knowing what to expect can help people deal with the worst effects of El Niño.
The only El Niño events comparable in strength to the one now developing occurred in 1982-83 and 1997-98. A single pair of events isn't much to base any projections on of what might happen across North America this winter. However, there are a few things we can likely expect:
The 2015-2016 El Niño episode has already been classified as "strong," with models indicating that it could reach the status of "very strong" by the end of the year. Now is the time to start preparing! Big Bags USA® is meeting flood mitigation and flood preparedness needs all across the United States. Our flood barriers are packaged seven systems per pallet, offering 105 linear foot of protection that can be easily stockpiled.
