Winter Storm and Flooding Safety
Many people think flooding mostly occurs in the spring, but flooding can happen anywhere at anytime. Snow melt after a big winter storm can cause major flooding issues. We're sure to see more of these issues in 2016, especially here in the Midwest, where we're experiencing some interesting temperature fluctuations. Big Bags USA® wants to make sure you stay safe this winter season!
While we've had a pretty mild winter so far in the Midwest, other parts of the country haven't been so luckily. Places along the east coast recently got pummeled with a bunch of snow. With this being an El Niño year, we can expect to see more of these types of storms before the winter season is over. We're in for a very wet winter this year and people need to be prepared for what may come to their area. While snow can bring many dangerous conditions in and of itself, those dangers can continue even after it melts.
It's tempting to hit the road once the snow and ice begins to melt. However, snow melt can cause serious flooding issues. Creeks and rivers often overflow from the rush of melting snow and ice. Be sure to watch the news to see if any roads are closed due to flooding. If you come to a road that is covered in water, turn around - do not try driving through it. In addition to sweeping your vehicle away, standing water can be contaminated with toxins and chemicals or be filled with debris that can damage your vehicle. Road closures, cones, sawhorses and other cautionary signs are put in place for your safety, so be sure to pay attention to them.
