14 Eye-Opening Hurricane Facts
Atlantic hurricane season is well underway, and while we may not have experienced a hurricane making landfall in the U.S. yet, we have seen quite a bit of rain from tropical storm activity. August marks the beginning of the peak period for hurricanes, which will run through October. That means that now is the time to prepare for what experts are predicting to be a slightly more active hurricane season this year. In fact, it's expected to be the most active season since 2012.
On average, there are six hurricanes each year, three of which are categorized as "major" hurricanes. Taking a look at history facts provides important examples of the potentially dangerous impact hurricanes can have on the U.S., and why we need to be prepared!
1. The "Great Galveston Hurricane" is considered the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history. It struck Texas in the year 1900, and resulted in an estimated 11,000 deaths.
2. According to the data from the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, the top three states for hurricane landfalls since 1851 are Florida with 114, Texas with 63 and Louisiana with 54.
3. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused 8.5 million power outages across 21 states. That's the highest outage total ever.
4. In 2005, 23 days after Hurricane Katrina hit, local utilities only had power restored to 3/4 of their customers.
5. Florida is hit by approximately 40% of the hurricanes that occur in the U.S.
6. The costliest hurricane to make landfall was Hurricane Katrina, with an estimated $108 billion in damages.
7. Approximately 90% of the deaths that occur during hurricanes result from drowning in floods.
8. Most hurricanes in North America hit areas near the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The warmer water creates more favorable conditions for hurricanes.
9. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew blew across southern Florida at speeds of 140-160 mph. In terms of property loss, Andrew was one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit North America. The hurricane caused over $25 billion in damages.
10. The year 2005 saw the most hurricanes ever to form in a single Atlantic season, with 15 hurricanes.
11. Hurricane Katrina caused levee breaches leading to around 80% of the city of New Orleans being flooded.
12. Five of the 10 most costly hurricanes in the U.S. have occurred since the year 1990.
13. Hurricanes often spawn tornadoes. For example, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 spawned 62 tornadoes.
14. Approximately 5 hurricanes strike the U.S. coastline during an average 3-year period. Of these, two are major hurricanes over 110 mph.
As you can see from these facts, hurricanes can be extremely devastating to both people and their property. Now is the time to get prepared! There are many things you can do now to prepare for the possibility of a major hurricane this season. Check out our blog titled, "Hurricane Preparedness: Before the Storm Hits," for more on what you can do to prepare.
Along with hurricanes comes the possibility of major flooding. Even if you don't live on the coastline, you can still be affected by hurricanes and other tropical storm activity. Just refer back to fact number 7, and you'll see the importance of being prepared for flooding. Our flood control systems are the fastest deployed flood barrier on the market. They can handle the highest demands at a fraction of the costs normally associated with rapid deployed systems.
