National Preparedness Month: Be Prepared with Big Bags USA®
September is National Preparedness Month, which makes sense with the peak of hurricane season upon us. This month is dedicated to reminding people to take action to prepare now for emergency situations such as hurricanes and major flooding. Keep reading to learn more about what you can do this month and throughout the year in regards to emergency preparedness.
One of the challenges we face in America is maximizing awareness and encouraging participation in disaster preparedness activities to affect change at the community level. Research shows that individuals who believe they are prepared for emergency situations often aren't as prepared as they think, and many individuals admit they don't plan to prepare at all. While emergency managers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMT/paramedics and other emergency responders work to keep us safe, we must all take some personal responsibility to be prepared.
Know your risk, take action and be an example in your community. Emergencies happen unexpectedly, anywhere and at anytime. Therefore, its important to understand the potential risks associated with your community. Is your community on the coast? Do you live near a river? How severe is your flood risk? Use Weather.gov to stay informed about severe weather, learn about wireless emergency alerts that are sent to your phone, and get tips on disaster preparedness from Ready.gov. Make sure you and your family are prepared for the possibility of an emergency, and ensure that you can go for at least 3 days without electricity, water service, access to a supermarket or other local services. Prepare a disaster supply kit and create a family emergency plan so that your family knows both what to do and how to communicate during an emergency situation. In addition, be a positive influence on your community by sharing about your preparedness efforts with others. Get involved in the community and attend community meetings where you can encourage local officials to take action in regards to disaster preparedness.
We're always ready to help local, state and federal agencies be prepared! At Big Bags USA®, our main objective is to assist communities and individuals both in times of need, as well as in the pre-flood time frames to help minimize property damage. In communities that are prone to flooding in the past, stockpiling Big Bags USA® flood barriers in strategic locations can greatly reduce response time. Our sandbag systems can be located near public works facilities, property owners or even city municipality buildings, ready to deploy when the need for a flood barrier arises. We will help protect you and your communities' property, giving you some comfort knowing you have protection in place prior to flooding.
