2016: The Year for Flooding in the United States

Last year, the United States experienced more floods than any other year since records began in 1980. According to an analysis by Munich Re, a global reinsurance firm, 19 separate floods swamped the nation in 2016. In order to qualify as a "disaster" or "loss event" in the eyes of the firm, the event must cause at least one death or result in at least $3 million in damage. Many of the events experienced in 2016 well exceeded those standards. Learn details about a few of the major flooding events of 2016 below:

2016 Flooding Events

The worst of those 2016 floods was in Louisiana in August. A historic flood devastated a large area of southern Louisiana resulting from 20 to 30 inches of rainfall over several days. The disaster cost roughly $10 billion in damages, and was noted as the worst natural catastrophe in the United States since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Other major flooding events, costing billions of dollars in damages, include:
  • Houston in April
    • 9-17 inches of rain fell over the north and west sides of the Houston metro area
    • April 18th was the second wettest calendar day on record for any official Houston area reporting station
    • The most widespread flooding event to affect Houston since Tropical Storm Allison in 2001
    • $2.7 billion in damages
  • West Virginia in June
    • Torrential rainfall washed away homes, cars and roads in a two-day siege of downpours
    • In less than 12 hours, more than 10 inches fell
    • $1 billion in damages
  • Texas and Louisiana in March
    • Multiple days of heavy rainfall averaging 15 to 20 inches led to widespread flooding along the Sabine River basin on the Texas and Louisiana border
    • $2.3 billion in damages
  • Maryland in July
    • 6.05 inches of rain fell during the storm, and 5.92 inches of that fell in two hours
    • The flood may have been worse than the one brought on by Hurricane Agnes in 1972
Overall in 2016, there were 91 weather, climate or geological disasters in the U.S., which was the second-most on record. These disasters include severe storms, hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, heat waves and droughts. These weather-related catastrophes show the potential effects of unchecked climate change.
