Hurricane Season is Finally Over!

The end of November is finally here and that means the end of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season! This year has been a whirlwind when it comes to hurricanes. As measured by the number of storms, hurricanes, major hurricanes and longevity, the 2017 season is now among the top 10 most active hurricane seasons in history!

2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Overview

As the 2017 hurricane season wraps up, we have a lot to look back on. Here are the numbers for this year's hurricane activity:
  • 17 named storms
  • 10 hurricanes
  • 6 hurricanes that made landfall
  • 6 major hurricanes
  • 3 major hurricanes that made landfall
The most notable statistic from this season is that we recorded 6 major hurricanes, which is the 3rd most major hurricanes in a season on record. Plus, 3 of those storms made landfall, all of which were over US soil. Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria all caused major destruction to Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Hurricane recovery and relief is still going on in these areas and will continue for some time. While 2005 still holds the record, with 28 storms, the intensity and dangerous paths of this year's tropical systems caught even seasoned forecasters off guard.

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on August 25, 2017, as the first Category 4 storm to make a US landfall since Charley in 2004, and the first major hurricane since Wilma in 2005. Hurricane Harvey broke a record for the most rainfall ever produced by a single tropical system in the US. The storm dropped a total of 64.58 inches of rain over Nederland, Texas, about 90 miles east of Houston. Hurricane Harvey is estimated to have caused over $100 billion worth of damage.

Hurricane Irma

Less than a week after Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas, Hurricane Irma formed. Hurricane Irma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history outside of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. It set a record by maintaining Category 5 strength for 37 hours. That broke the old record of 24 hours by Typhoon Haiyan. Hurricane Irma made landfall in Cudjoe Key on September 10, and was the strongest storm to hit Florida in 12 years! Winds of 130 mph snapped branches, ripped up roads, flooded hundreds of homes and left millions without power.

Hurricane Maria

Just as Hurricane Irma fizzled out, Hurricane Maria formed. After pummeling the Virgin Islands, Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane. It is the most intense hurricane landfall in Puerto Rico since before the Great Depression. Hurricane Maria left the entire island of Puerto Rico without power for weeks, and now months later, many islands are still cleaning up and trying to restore power in some areas.

While the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season didn't have the most hurricanes, and it wasn't the deadliest, it could become the costliest in US history. While the numbers are still being figured, it's estimated around at least $316 billion dollars. As we analyze this data, it's important to think forward on how we can mitigate damage in the future.
