4 Ways to Landscape for Hurricane Preparedness

With hurricane season upon us, now's the time to be thinking about how you can prepare your property. While it can be difficult to protect your home from hurricane force winds, there are some steps you can take to minimize the damage. Below, Big Bags USA® shares 4 landscaping tips to better prepare your property for a potential hurricane.

1. Choose the Right Plants.

Salt can have a major impact on plant growth. During a hurricane, storm surge and high winds can cause something called salt spray. This is when tiny droplets of salty water are thrown into the air from the waves breaking. Properties in coastal regions should prepare for salt spray by planting the right greenery. You want to choose plants that can handle salt on their stems, leaves and roots.

2. Plant Your Trees Properly.

Some trees are prone to more damage than others. Trees with shallow roots, planted in soft soil have more of a tendency to topple over in high winds. Not only do you want to make sure you plant the right kind of trees, but make sure you plant them in the proper spot. You should consider the mature height of the tree to help avoid future interference with fences, buildings or power lines.

3. Use Soft Mulch.

During hurricane-force winds, small rocks can easily become projectiles, which can often break windows or damage the siding of the house. If you have rock or pea gravel in your flower beds or along paths around your yard, consider replacing them with soft mulch such as shredded bark. This softer material is less dangerous if caught in high winds.

4. Prune Your Trees Thoroughly.

Frequent and thorough pruning of your trees will not only make your landscape look right, but it's also a good way to help prevent storm damage to your property. Be sure to trim dead, damaged or diseased tree limbs, especially those that are too close to your home or near power lines. For any work near power lines, consider calling a professional. Check the yard for any cracked, hollow or decayed trees. Have them removed to minimize the risk of a hurricane uprooting them.

While landscaping can help protect your property from hurricane damage, you should consider other ways to protect your home or business as well. Big Bags USA® flood barriers are the best protection you can get for your property. They provide lightning fast flood protection at a fraction of the cost of regular sandbags. They are 200 times faster to deploy than traditional sandbags, and they use just half the sand! For more information, give us a call at 800-337-0537 or visit our website at www.BigBagsUSA.com.
