Fast Flooding Facts

While there are a large majority of locations where flooding is expected, in many areas, flooding can be sudden and unexpected. Flash floods, flooding related to hurricanes, or even winter flooding from snowmelt are all very realistic ways that flooding can happen. At Big Bags USA®, we see many ways that flooding impacts homes and families, which is why we do what we do. Our flood barrier system was created to make a difference in towns and communities by providing quick and easy tools that guard against flooding. Here are some fun and fast facts about flooding and being prepared for flooding!

  • A flood or flash flood can happen in all 50 states in the U.S.
  • Everywhere is a flood zone because where there is water, there can be flooding.
  • Flash floods can bring walls of water from 10 to 20 feet high.
  • For the past 30 years, flooding has resulted in almost $8 billion in damage each year.
  • Flooding can be caused by spring thawing (snow and frozen grounds melting in the spring), heavy rains, snow melt runoffs, flash floods, and mudflows.
  • Land development and construction including new buildings and roads makes an area more vulnerable to flooding because it takes away land that would naturally absorb the water.
  • It only takes two feet of moving water to carry your car away.
  • The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) warns that just 1 inch of water can result in over $10,000 worth of damage.
  • Areas that are not high-risk flood zones are responsible for over 20 percent of National Flood Insurance Program claims and one-third of federal disaster assistance.
  • In preparation for a flood, it is important to stock up on first aid items, non-perishable foods, 3 gallons of water per person for 3 days, battery-operated radio for weather reports, extra batteries, personal hygiene necessities.
  • Deserts can experience flooding because the hard soil cannot absorb rainwater, leading to flash floods.
  • Since flood damage is almost never covered by homeowners insurance, flood insurance is important for people living in high-risk flood zones.
  • To stay safe during a flood, go to the highest ground of floor possible. If your skin comes in contact with flood water, make sure to wash it with soap and disinfected water because the contents are unknown.
  • A car can be taken away in as little as 2 feet of water.
