Historical Flooding Facts
You’ve probably heard of the “hundred-year flood” but do you know how the term really affects you? This winter and spring combination has been devastating to so many communities across the Midwest with a combination of snowmelt, spring flooding, tornadoes, and more. The weather has been nothing short of astronomical. In fact, an article by USA Today said "Flooding in at least 8 states along portions of the Mississippi River – due to relentless, record-breaking spring rainfall – is the longest-lasting since the "Great Flood" of 1927, the National Weather Service said." We wanted to take a bit of time to look into historical floods, how often or frequent the record flooding is happening, and even take a quick peek into potential cycles.

The term “100-year flood” has been used in an attempt to simplify a flood that statistically has a 1-percent chance of occurring in any given year. This means that the term “100-year storm” is used to define a rainfall that statistically has this same 1-percent chance of occurring.
By being prepared to protect you and your communities' property, this should provide comfort, knowing that you have some tools for protection in place prior to flooding. If you are doing all that you can to minimize damages to your property, then you are in the top 10%.

How Often or Frequent Is This Happening?
Have you ever wondered if draughts and flooding go hand in hand? It’s always hard to make estimations because there are so many factors, however, we found a very interesting graph from the EPA that shows yearly data going from 1895 to 2011.The term “100-year flood” has been used in an attempt to simplify a flood that statistically has a 1-percent chance of occurring in any given year. This means that the term “100-year storm” is used to define a rainfall that statistically has this same 1-percent chance of occurring.
