The Basics of a Supply Kit
It’s time to start your prep kit, and you’ll want to start by getting an airtight plastic gab to put all of your disaster supply kits. It’s easiest when you use two easy to carry containers such as plastic bins or duffel bags. You will then fill the containers with these items:- Water - Aim for one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. This should be enough for drinking and sanitation.
- Food - You will want to have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio, as well as an NOAA Weather Radio with a tone alert.
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust masks to filter out contaminated air, as well as plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags with plastic ties for personal sanitation.
- Wrench or pliers (for turning off the utilities
- Manual can opener
- Local maps
- Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
Extra Items You Can Add
Depending on your individual needs, you may consider adding a few additional items to your prep kit:- Prescription medications
- Non-prescription medication (pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids, or laxatives).
- Glasses & contact lens solution
- Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream
- Pet food & extra water for your pet
- Cash or traveler’s checks
- Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
- Complete change of clothing appropriate for your seasonal weather and sturdy shoes
- Household chlorine bleach and a medicine dropper to disinfect water
- Fire Extinguisher
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
- Mess kits, paper cups, plates, paper towels, and plastic utensils
- Paper and pencil
- Books, games, puzzles, or other activities for children
Now That You Have Your Kit - It’s Time to Maintain It
The fact is, you may or may not need your kit for a few weeks, months, or may not even need it this season (crossing fingers for you!). Here are a few tips for maintaining your kit, as well as how you should store it.Maintaining Your Kit
When maintaining your kit, you’ll want to keep canned food in a cool, dry place, store boxed food in a tightly closed plastic or metal containers, replace expired items as needed, and then continue to re-think your needs every year. You may need to update your kit as your family’s needs change.Storing Your Kit
The fact is, you won’t know where you will be when an emergency occurs. You will likely have an advance warning with a hurricane, but there’s nothing wrong with being over-prepared. Consider keeping a designated kit at home, and make sure everyone in the family knows where to find it if you need to leave quickly. Keep a 24-hour stock at work, in case you get stuck there for a day. You may also want to keep a small version of your emergency kit in your car as well.Flooding Control Products
In communities that are prone to flooding in the past, stockpiling of BIG BAGS USA flood barriers in strategic locations can greatly reduce response time.
