3 Easy Steps to Prepare for Disaster

Disaster can strike anyone anywhere. The word “disaster” is, of course, a very broad term and we’re going to narrow it down to flooding, as this is the type of disaster that we specialize in. Preparing for an unknown and inexperienced disaster, like flooding, can feel overwhelming and maybe even a bit confusing. However, having a plan in place is one of the best ways to give you home, business, and family a chance at minimizing the damage.

Do 1 Thing is a web-based program that is designed to prepare your family for emergencies throughout the year. The theme for January is to “Make a Plan,” so we’re going to lines out a few things your family can plan to do to prepare for a flooding disaster.

#1. Learn About Common Disasters to Your Area and Plan for What You Will Do

Different areas are prone to different types of disasters, so it’s important to know which ones are going to affect you and what you need to do to prepare for them. One of the first things you can consider is if your home is in a floodplain or an area that has earthquakes. Are tornadoes likely to happen in your area, and when? Knowing when and what disasters you could potentially expect in your area will help you know how to prepare for them. You can also reach out to your local emergency management offices or the American Red Cross to learn more about your area.

Now it’s time to make your plan. Get your family and potentially even your community to discuss to prepare and even respond to those emergencies. Things to consider are where you live, work, and where you spend your time. You never know where disaster will strike, so planning escape routes for different locations, and making sure that family members know their responsibilities can put your mind at ease for disaster preparedness.

#2. Take Steps to Prevent Damage at Home

When you are aware of the disasters that could happen in your area, there are a few things you can do to lower your risk of injury or property damage. Take a look at these considerations as you make your plans:

Tornado
You can add a tornado safe room to your home or even add extra protection to an existing room to keep your family safe in the event of a tornado.

Hurricane
Hurricane shutters can be a great way to help protect your home, as well as trimming the teams around your home to prevent damage. Securing your soffits to make sure that they won’t provide a way for wind and water to get into your home are also a great idea. Make sure that entryway doors have three hinges and a deadbolt lock.

Flood
If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, a permanent way to help is to elevate your home above the base flood level. Elevate your utilities and make sure that you have adequate flooding venting. You can also use flood-resistant building materials when you build or remodel. Taking these steps can lower your flood insurance rates in some areas as well! Of course, having flood protection barriers on hand is also a great way to prepare in flood-prone communities. Big Bags USA® can help with your flood barrier needs!

Wildfire
In an area that experiences wildfires, you can use fire-resistant building materials like shingles and siding. Cut back the branches and brush within 30 feet of your home, and keep firewood at least 30 feet away. You can refer to resources like the National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise Program for more ideas.

Earthquake
Secure your furniture, appliances, and water heater to the walls and floors to help create a safer environment. You can also install safety catches on cabinets and cumbered doors to additional safety. Make sure that your appliances are connected with flexible connections, and consider using a safety film on your windows.

#3. Plan What To Do If You Have to Evacuate.

Choose two different places for your family to meet in the event of an emergency. One of these places should be right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency such as a fire, while the other should be outside your community in case you cannot return home or are asked to evacuate. Decide both where you would go and the route that you would take to get there. You may choose to go to a hotel, stay with friends or family in a safe location or go to a shelter. Practice an evacuation plan that way you're ready when the event actually does occur. The more practice you've had, the more confident you will be in the real situation.

Plan ahead for your pets because pets are typically not allowed in shelters due to health concerns. Keep a phone list of pet-friendly hotels and animal shelters that are along your evacuation route. You can also contact your local humane society or animal shelter to ask if pet emergency shelters will be opened during disaster situations. Consider anyone with special needs or disabilities and how you will assist them during an evacuation as well.
