2020 NOAA Spring Outlook

Winter and spring 2019 were devastating to many areas around the country. We saw incredible amounts of rainfall and combined with the already saturated ground created a nightmare of flooding for specifically the Midwest regions. We want to take a few moments to look at 2020 and see what the predictions are for the coming months, as everyone says “know better, do better.” If you know what happened last year, and can see what the potential is for this year, you can prepare communities for flooding with the best flood barrier on the market. Here are a few things you need to know about the 2020 Spring flood risk.

Looking Back to Look Forward

2019 was the second-wettest year in the lower 48 states in 125 years or records, according to the NOAA. To make matters even worse, for Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, it was the wettest year on record. It was also among the 10 wettest years in almost every state in the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio Valleys.

The reason that looking at last year is so important is that from August 2019 to January 2020 we have seen the wettest August to January period on record in the Dakotas and Michigan. It has been a near-record wet year in Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin - which just continues the wet streak. One important thing to remember is that when the northern states experience really wet winters, those effects will trickle down causing wet seasons for the lower states - which is what caused such catastrophic flooding for so many states last year.

Ground Saturation

One way you can start to predict what will happen this year can be from looking at the soaked soil as we approach the spring season. All of the precipitation that fell over the many areas through fall and winter meant that the soil moisture was in the highest 1% values for mid-February over a massive area from eastern Montant and Wyoming through the Great Lakes and southward into the Tennessee and lower Mississippi valleys. Just for kicks, we’re comparing this time last year with what we’re experiencing NOW - we’ll let the maps speak for themselves …

What needs to be noted is that because the soil is so saturated, any rain or snowmelt that will happen over the coming weeks will not be able to soak into the ground. Take a guess at what is going to happen to it … it’s going to run off into creeks, streams, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs - and could even just flood fields or low-lying areas. As you can see by the map below, there is already some flooding starting in the Dakotas, and through Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas - as well as the immense flooding happening in the southern states.

It’s All Up In the Air

The Spring 2020 outcome will all depend on heavy rainfalls during the time when the snow melts. What made last year so catastrophic was that the Winter Storm Ulmer, a Plain's bomb cyclone, and melted snowpack. The three-month precipitation outlook from the NOAA expects the next few months to be generally wetter than average, from the Dakotas to the East Coast and all the way down to the gulf. There’s no way to really predict what will happen over the next few months, but whatever happens, will be crucial in determining if 2020 will be another year of flooding.

Big Bags USA® Is Here to Help

Every Big Bags USA Flood Barrier System is made out of the highest quality materials in the heart of the USA ... right in Missouri! Big Bags USA protective flood barrier systems are ground conforming and therefore have the ability to be deployed on terrain that is uneven or unleveled with negligible preparations. The protective flood barrier system is well suited for corner and curved deployments. The systems are stackable directly on top of each other two systems tall, for higher stacking the pyramid method is advised. In environments that are unreachable with standard equipment, Big Bags USA flood barrier systems are liftable for safe and effective deployment using our spreader bar.
