The 10 Most Disaster Prone States
Every state is going to experience flooding at some point - it’s inevitable. While it may feel like you are just at the whim of Mother Nature (and you kind of are), you are not without tools to prepare against it. Flooding happens, but that’s why there are flooding tools that can be purchased ahead of time and stored for when you need them. Even though flooding can happen anywhere, there are a few places that are more prone to it, so we’re going to take a look at those areas and then help you make a plan.

10 States that Are Disaster Prone
Disasters can range from fires to hurricanes, but did you know that flooding is a common result of many disasters? Here are the ten most disaster-prone areas in the country, taken from an article published by MoneyWise.com. You can see the rest of the states on their list, but we’re only covering the top ten.10. Colorado
Since 1953, there have been 83 major disasters in Colorado. There are numerous types of disasters, from floods, droughts, blizzards, and, of course, forest fires. The western states are more prone to forest fires and Colorado is no different. It can be caused by a lot of different things, but specifically the dry climate, thick vegetation, and mountain peaks like lightning rods. Forest fires are incredibly devastating to an area, but did you also know that they increase flooding potential?9. New Mexico
Since 1953, there have been 86 major disasters in New Mexico. Obviously, the vast majority of those are fires, as they have a fire season that goes from May or June until fall. However, the dry conditions also lead to monsoon-style rains that have caused flooding and mudslides. Our flood barriers are exceptional for flooding but also for mudslides as well.8. Oregon
There have been 86 major disasters since 1953 in Oregon as well, and the great Northwest is not one to mess around with. There are many natural threats to the area, including destructive snowstorms, floods, fires, mudslides, earthquakes, drought, and as if that wasn’t enough - a tsunami.7. Alabama
Since 1953, there have been 87 major disasters, specifically due to the location that it has on the Gulf Coast. Unfortunately, it tends to be an easy target for many catastrophic hurricanes. In fact, 19 of those hurricanes have become disaster declarations, a few of them are easily known across the country, like Katrina, Irma, or Camille.
6. New York
There have been 96 major disasters to hit New York since 1953. The most commonly declared disasters were from floods, blizzards, tornadoes, fires, ice stores, and even an earthquake. Hurricane Sandy was also one of the worst storms to hit New York City as everyone was without power and there was over $50 billion in damage.5. Florida
Surprised they made the list? No, we didn’t think you were. Since 1953 there have been 132 major disasters to hit Florida state. This ranges from fires to hurricanes, but surprisingly, there are more declarations from fires than from hurricanes. In fact, in 2017, more than 115 wildfires were burning at the same time.4. Washington
Since 1953 there have been 147 major disasters in Washington state. It is known for being damp with lush, green forests, but it does have dry spells, and they are devastating. With floods, mudslides, landslides, earthquakes, and even a volcano eruption, there are a lot of things to watch out for in Washington.3. Oklahoma
It may seem unusual for a state in the midwest to get listed, but since 1953, they have experienced 178 major disasters. “Tornado Alley” is what it’s known best for, and while the twisters are easily the worst disaster, there are also wildfires, floods, and severe winter storms.2. Texas
Everything is bigger in Texas, so they say, and it must apply to the major disasters as well. There have been 263 major disasters since 1953, owing to the fires, floods, tornadoes, hail, winter storms, and of course, the hurricanes. Hurricane Harvey from 2017 will probably be considered one of the worse natural disasters to hit Texas at this point. With more than 4 feet of rain on Houston, historic flooding, homeowners rushing to their rooftops, and $125 billion in damage, it is remembered for a reason.1. California
Finally, California had to make the list. Since 1953, there have been 305 major disasters. It is the most disaster-prone state, and while you may assume it’s because of the earthquakes, it’s actually due to the wildfires. Wildfires are incredibly devastating to an area and make it much more prone to flooding in the end.
Feeling Safe?
While your state may not have made the list, do not forget that you aren’t out of the clear yet.
