What’s the Difference Between Hurricanes, Cyclones, and Typhoons?

Just the words sound powerful, fearsome, dangerous, and maybe even a little exciting - depending on your need for thrills. While these all sound as different as they do dangerous, there is only one thing that separates these storms - location. Amazingly, the only difference between hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons is merely where they happen. The weather patterns that make them up are the same: weather disturbances, warm tropical oceans, moisture, and even light winds. If these all come together in the right way they can produce violent winds, incredible waves, torrential rains, and the flooding that is so concerning with these types of events. Here are a few fun facts and interesting tidbits about these powerful forces of nature!

Tropical Storms - The Start of it All

Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are all the by-products of tropical storms. They re some of the most destructive weather systems on earth, and have quite the reputation. These tragic storms are accompanied by strong winds, torrential rains, and massive pressure falls. A tropical storm starts as merely a system of thunderstorms - the speeds only range from 39-73 miles per hour. But there is a point when the storm will take on a new name and become the raging systems that cause so much damage.

Hurricanes

The storm system is located in the Northeast Pacific or the Atlantic, the term “hurricane” will be given to it. The Atlantic area will include storms in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. Many of these hurricanes emerge thousands of miles away from the coastline that they make their mark to hit. In the United States, we also use the “hurricane” term to refer to the storms that affect Mexico and the Caribbean cities and islands. If you already know about the National Hurricane Center in Miami, did you also know that hurricanes are monitored by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu?

Cyclones

These storms are located in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Cyclones most commonly appear in countries like Madagascar, India, and parts of Australia. They hit countries like Japan Indonesia, Malaysia, and other nearby countries. There are also four agencies worth noting who is responsible for monitoring these storms: the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the India Meteorological Department for those in the northern Indian Ocean, the Meteo-France for those in the southwestern Indian Ocean (around Madagascar) and New Zealand's MetService for those in the southern Pacific.

Typhoons

In the Northwest Pacific, the term "typhoon" is used. Typhoons typically occur in the proximity of the Philippines, China, and the Marshall Islands. These storms are monitored by the Japanese Meteorological Agency. If a storm forms in the Central Pacific Hurricane Center's area but then moves west over the International Date Line, it becomes the responsibility of the Japanese Meteorological Agency.

Fun Facts About Hurricanes, Cyclones, and Typhoons

1. Hurricanes are giant tropical storms that produce heavy rainfall and super-strong winds.
2. Hurricanes rotate around a circular center called the “eye“, where it is generally calm with no clouds. Surrounding the eye is the eyewall – the most dangerous part of the hurricane with the strongest winds, thickest clouds, and heaviest rain!
3. Most hurricanes occur harmlessly out at sea. However, when they move towards the land they can be incredibly dangerous and cause serious damage.
4. The strong spiraling winds of a hurricane can reach speeds of up to 320kmph – strong enough to rip up entire trees and destroy buildings!

At first, the storms move from high latitudes to lower latitudes, i.e., they travel towards the southeast over North America and Europe, then eastwards.
As the storms move across land, the air pressure may fall rapidly to below 980 millibars (980 hectopascals) (hPa) (SI).
