Flood Report: January (Part 1)

After a record-breaking hurricane season last year, it would be an understatement to say it was an incredibly wet year. Just what will 2021 have in store for us? It's hard to predict, which makes having flood preparedness plans in place to help mitigate against flooding is vital to the safety of you and your property. At Big Bags USA®, we understand the risk and severity of flooding, as well as the need for a flood barrier system. This is why we're here today to spotlight a few areas of the US that are experiencing or predicted to experience flooding in the near future.

Jan. 6 - Flooding Brings New Woes to NYC Church Hard-hit by COVID-19

"NEW YORK (AP) — A Lutheran church in New York City already reeling from the COVID-19 deaths of more than 60 members of the congregation has suffered a new trauma: Severe flood damage from the rupture of a major municipal water main. The flooding caused significant damage Monday to the sanctuary and to basement-level rooms, including a theater, said Jared Stahler, senior pastor at Saint Peter’s Church."

Jan.1 - Dreary New Year’s Day Weather to Worsen, with a Chance of Flooding in Charlotte Region

The dreary New Year’s Day weather in North Carolina will likely worsen overnight, with heavier rain and possible flooding now in the forecast for Charlotte and surrounding counties. “Very heavy rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour will be possible,” the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement issued at 3:35 p.m. “Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage, such as ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded roads. Water levels of small streams may also rise rapidly. Seek higher ground if threatened by floodwaters.

Jan. 1 - Floods Possible in Columbia as Rainy Conditions Forecast for New Year’s weekend

"Stormy, wet weather hit South Carolina on New Year’s Day, swelling rivers and prompting warnings about flash flooding during the first weekend of 2021. An estimated two to four inches of rain were expected to have fallen on the Columbia area by early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A flood advisory was issued Friday for parts of Richland, Kershaw and Lexington counties. More rain was forecast for late Saturday afternoon and into the evening. Minor flooding was expected in the Five Points area, Maxcy Gregg Park and Rocky Branch Creek, the weather service said."
