International Mud Month: Big Bags USA

Are you aware that June is International Mud Month? The initial goal behind it was to remind us of the outdoors, the organized chaos of mother nature, and maintaining a connection to it. However, it also seems fitting to talk about mudslides, how they affect the country, and why Big Bags USA can be a protector from them. Here are a few things to inform you on mudslides, and how our flood barriers protect from mudslides.

The Makeup of A Mudslide

Burned slopes are extremely susceptible to mudslides because hot fires actually change the soil structure of the ground beneath. This causes the ground to repel water more easily, meaning less rainfall is absorbed and more runs off. During heavy rain events, the extra runoff can be so overwhelming that it picks up loose soil, dead vegetation, and rocks. Typically, these mudslides, or debris flows, start as smaller flows at various points on a slope. These small flows eventually converge at a stream bed, resulting in a massive sludge of water, mud, rocks, and vegetation that flows downstream causing devastation. As the water and mud roar down a slope, they quickly gain enough power to sweep up rocks and boulders to carry downhill with them. The resulting mudslide is strong enough to pick up trees, cars, and houses.

Getting Up Close and Personal With Mudslides

Not every state experiences mudslides, but for those that do, it can be devastating. Some of the most common states to experience mudslides are New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and California. What makes mudslides exceptionally prevalent is that they are often tied to wildfires. These natural disasters are incredibly devastating for a community, so if there’s a tool that can help - it’s time to use it! Thankfully, that’s where Big Bags USA comes into play.

Can Big Bags USA Help?

While our flood barrier systems are most commonly known for flood protection, they can also be used for a variety of other emergency situations - like mudslides.

Our barriers have been field-tested against moving logs and other debris. The 6 mm thick polypropylene bags are not only strong, but they are flexible. Therefore, they can be deployed on any surface without the need for trenching or leveling. During the cleanup of these mudslides, mud can be dumped into the barriers instead of sand. The barriers can then be used for traffic safety, to keep the mud and debris from sliding into the roadways. They can also be used during future mudslide events to protect buildings and other property subject to possible mudslide damage. Stack the barriers in a pyramid to achieve vertical height if needed. Big Bags USA® is the fastest deployed barrier anywhere, and we are here to help you be prepared for flooding, mudslides, and more!

Big Bags USA flood control systems and flood barrier systems provide lightning-fast flood protection at a fraction of the cost of regular sandbags. One system is 36” wide, 15’ long, and 40” tall. One five-bag system can be placed and filled by two men in less than 10 minutes. That’s equal to 15 linear feet every ten minutes. No other sandbag deployment method equals the speed of deployment possible with Big Bags USA, which is how we have earned our ranking on the Top Ten Flood Barriers list.
