5 Frequently Asked Questions About Big Bags USA

Here at Big Bags USA, we pride ourselves on being on the top ten flood barrier list, this is largely because of how fast we can deploy our various flood barrier systems. Flooding is a dangerous event that can happen without warning, making it crucial that you have a flood preparation plan in place to prevent damage before it happens. To better prepare you, we want to cover 5 frequently asked questions in regard to our flood systems and what to do in the event of a flood. Big Bags USA developed a rapid deployment barrier system that is suited to deploy at record speeds with minimal manpower. Providing flooding-prone communities with a reliable source of flood mitigation. Let's dive into some questions you may be wondering about!

1. Why is Big Bags USA in the Top Ten Flood Barriers list?

  • 6mm thick polypropylene, made with the highest UV resistant polymers available to increase longevity in sunlight.
  • The flexibility of the barrier allows the product to be used on any an all surfaces without the need for trenching or leveling to get a water-tight seal.
  • 200 times faster to deploy than traditional sandbag walls.
  • Uses 1/2 the amount of sand used in a sand-bag wall built to the same height.
  • Not only is the bag re-usable, but the sand can also be kept in the bags and stored in a warehouse for the next use.

2. Why Use Our Construction Barrier Systems?

Big Bags USA construction barriers are rated for over 2,200 hours of direct sunlight. Our sand-filled demonstration barriers displayed outside of the factory remain uncompromised after 10 years of exposure to the elements. The heavy-duty construction, combined with the best UV protection available, allows the bags to be reused on multiple cofferdam projects.

3. When should you avoid driving in a flood?

A good rule of thumb is that if you notice while driving the middle line on the road is no longer visible, it’s time to heed the advice from the National Weather Service. “Turn around, don’t drown.” Did you know that it takes only 6 inches of water to lift a vehicle off of the ground? If you are caught in rising water, it’s important to abandon your vehicle and seek higher ground.

4. What Equipment is Necessary to Assemble Big Bags?

Necessary equipment for any deployment of the Big Bags USA barriers are cordless screw guns and ¾”-1 1/2” wood or drywall screws to attach one system to another before filling. A few clamps can also be used with a minimum of two clamps on each side. When the bags are filled all the way, remove clamps, and connect to the next system.

Heavy equipment that is normally used to fill the bags is Front End Loaders, Skid Steers, Backhoes, Side Dump Trucks, Cement Trucks (with a slurry of sand and water), and Concrete Conveyor belt Trucks.

Training and organization of labor are greatly reduced using the Big Bags USA barrier compared to conventional sandbags. Effectively utilizing a smaller unskilled labor force creates a larger margin in budgeting and mitigation compared to a conventional sandbag barrier.

5. How are current water levels measured?

The National Weather Service relies heavily on the network of river gages operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Data is then received from these river gages either by phone or telemetry or satellite. Also, during these times of flooding, USGS technicians will be out taking flow measurements and relaying that back to the NWS and other agencies who will provide vital information for river flood warnings and forecast program.

If you Have a Flood Emergency, We Should Be Your First Call!

We hope we are one of your first calls in an event of flooding emergency. Big Bags USA protective flood barrier systems are ground conforming and therefore can be deployed on terrain that is uneven or unleveled with negligible preparations. The protective flood barrier system is well suited for corner and curved deployments. The systems are stackable directly on top of each other two systems tall, for higher stacking the pyramid method is advised. In environments that are unreachable with standard equipment, Big Bags USA flood barrier systems are liftable for safe and effective deployment using our spreader bar. We hope we are the first thought when you have a flooding emergency and have us on speed dial if you are in a flood zone.
