Winter Flooding.

It may be hard to believe, but much of the United State is at risk for flooding during the wintertime. You've likely never considered it as you are focused on the cold, snowfall, and icy conditions, but where do you think much of that water goes after the snow and ice melt? Today, Big Bags USA® is here to highlight the top reasons that the US experiences winter flooding and how you can help protect yourself from it. Read on to learn more!

Causes of Winter Flooding

There are many different factors that can lead to winter flooding, and as such, it is important to become more familiar with the cause and effects. The most common cause of winter flooding is typically stemming from rapid snowmelt, ice jams, or coastal flooding.

You'll also have to consider the different types of weather that you experience across the country. The East Coast, for example, is susceptible to winter flooding due to the large, low-pressure areas and northeastern winds causing coastal flooding from the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic states.

The most common type of wintertime flooding is caused by snowmelt, typically during the transition between winter and spring. Snowmelt can cause an enormous amount of water to be released in a short period of time, and the ground is typically still too frozen for the water to be absorbed. Most of this snowmelt takes place in the northern Midwestern states. However, the runoff actually affects those states under them, causing streams and rivers to overrun their embankments.

As for the Western parts of the U.S., while they may not experience as much snowfall, this is the rainy season for them. Pacific storm systems move inland, bringing the potential for heavy rains. During this season, the heavy winter rains can lead to mudslides and flooding, potentially causing millions upon millions of dollars of damages each year.
