Superstorm Sandy one year later - 2nd costliest storm in US History
A look back at Sandy - October 2012
One year ago the Atlantic seaboard was slammed by Superstorm Sandy and residents of the East Coast are still feeling her effect. This "Superstorm" has been classified as the 2nd costliest storm to ever hit the United States of America. Sandy affected 24 states, including the entire eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine and west across the Appalachian Mountains to Michigan and Wisconsin. The states of New York and New Jersey were affected with severe damage and a storm surge hit New York City on October 29th flooding streets, tunnels, subway lines and causing widespread power outages both inside and outside the city.
Sandy's path and timeline
Sandy started as a low pressure system in the Caribbean and intensified to a 115 mph storm making landfall in Cuba. After turning north toward the Bahamas, Sandy Intensified to a Category 3 storm as it moved up the eastern seaboard. As Sandy approached the Northeast coast, it merged with another storm dropping from the North and was coined "Frankenstorm." Sandy hit New York City and the New Jersey coast with a 13 foot storm surge, heavy rain, and damaging high winds on October 29th, 2012.
Sandy's impact
The most tragic impact of Sandy was that it killed 148 people in 9 countries. Eighty seven people in the United States were killed directly or indirectly from the effects of this storm. In economic terms, the storm caused over $68 Billion of damage and this total continues to rise. On October 31st, 2012, over 6 million customers were reported to still be without power in 15 states with New York and New Jersey having the lions share of power outages.

Sandy's aftermath
Many emergency agencies were involved at the local, state and federal level and stories of personal heroism during this crisis can be found. Several other charity organizations have contributed to the relief effort and the US Government eventually passed a $50.5 Billion Sandy Aid relief package. The hardest affected areas are still continuing clean up and reconstruction today and the effects of this Superstorm will continue to linger into the future. The Big Bags USA systems team sends out thoughts and prayers to the families affected by this storm and stands ready to help in any future storms that hit our great nation.
