The Road to Recovery
Here are some steps to take as soon as the floodwater level drops.
- If your home has suffered damage, call your insurance agent to file a claim.
- Check for structural damage before re-entering your home to avoid being trapped in a building collapse.
- Take photos of any floodwater in your home and save any damaged personal property.
- Make a list of damaged or lost items and include their purchase date and value with receipts, and place with the inventory you took prior to the flood. Some damaged items may require disposal, so keep photographs of these items.
- Keep power off until an electrician has inspected your system for safety.
- Boil water for drinking and food preparation until authorities tell you that your water supply is safe.
- Prevent mold by removing wet contents immediately.
- Wear gloves and boots to clean and disinfect. Wet items should be cleaned with a pine-oil cleanser and bleach, completely dried, and monitored for several days for any fungal growth and odors.
Basement Flooding
Here are some basement flooding tips as well!
- Keep your kids and pets out of the flooded area.
- Wear rubber boots, gloves and work clothes.
- Do not eat, drink, smoke or touch your face while in the flooded area.
- Take care not to slip on wet surfaces.
- Run your sump pump to rid your basement of excess water.
- Mop up leftover water into a bucket or into your floor drain
- Use fans, dehumidifiers, and your furnace or air conditioner. Open windows and doors to circulate air.
- Remove all belongings from the flooded basement as soon as possible, and sanitize.
- Wash fabric items in hot or warm water with bleach.
- Scrub down all hard surfaces first with clean water, then with warm soapy water or a solution of one cup of liquid chlorine bleach diluted in five gallons of water.
- Flush and disinfect floor and sump pump drains with undiluted chlorine bleach.
- If you have a finished basement, discard and replace any portion of drywall that came into contact with flood water. Some wood paneling may be salvageable if you can clean and dry it properly without warping.
- Discard Carpeting that was under flood water if it can't be cleaned by a professional.
