15 Coastal Flood Risk Assesment Tools

Being prepared for flooding to occur is better than waiting to clean up after the fact. Not only can you avoid damages, you will also save a lot of money. One way to be prepared is to have a stockpile of flood barriers on hand in case of emergency situations. However, sometimes you can predict when you're area may be at risk for flooding. Check out these helpful tools from the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit on assessing the risks of coastal flooding!

1. Beach-fx

Coastal managers considering shore protection projects can download Beach-fx software and use it model and measure the costs and benefits of protecting existing infrastructure against erosion, inundation, and wave attack damages.

2. Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-Cap) Land Atlas

Examine land cover classifications within coastal regions and how they changed from 1996 to 2010. Use this browser-based tool to generate maps and summary statistics that document changes such as loss of forests or expansion of impermeable surfaces.

3. Coastal Change Hazards Portal

Policy makers, emergency managers, and citizens access information on hazards associated with severe storms, shoreline erosion, and sea level rise. This browser-based “mashup” provides access to historical data, publications, satellite imagery, maps, and more.

4. Coastal County Snapshots

Select a coastal county and explore summary snapshots describing its flood exposure, wetland benefits, or economic benefits from ocean jobs. Communities access these reports to benchmark current conditions and identify opportunities for building resilience.

5. Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper

Explore local maps to stimulate discussions about the people, places, and natural resources exposed to coastal flooding. Create a collection of maps showing risk from various hazards.

6. Coastal Resilience

Coastal planning officials use this suite of GIS-based tools to visualize flood risks from sea level rise and storm surge and identify areas and populations at risk.

7. Coastal Resilience Index

Communities can complete this questionnaire to assess their level of preparedness for extreme events. The exercise helps communities discuss and discover their climate-related vulnerabilities.

8. Extreme Water Levels

View probability statistics on the likelihood that coastal water levels at select stations will rise above or fall below a given elevation.

9. Hurricane-Induced Coastal Erosion Hazards

Access map layers showing predictions of how sandy beaches along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coastlines will respond to the direct landfall of category 1–5 hurricanes.

10. Inundation Analysis Tool

Coastal managers can query observations of select tidal gauges to find out how often and for how long local tides reached a specified elevation throughout their history.

11. National Assessment of Coastal Vulnerability to Sea Level Rise

This map uses a coastal vulnerability index (CVI) to give a subjective assessment of local risk associated with sea level rise along U.S. ocean coasts.

12. Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM)

This open-source downloadable model uses digital elevation data and other information to simulate potential impacts of long-term sea level rise on wetlands and shorelines.

13. Sea Level Change Curve Calculator

Get estimated rates of sea level change for any location along the U.S. ocean coast by selecting the closest NOAA tide gage to the location of interest.

14. Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Impacts Viewer

Explore how the shoreline is likely to change with increasing amounts of sea level rise. This tool lets you visualize the potential impacts of coastal flooding so you can prioritize actions for different scenarios.

15. Surging Seas—Sea Level Rise Analysis by Climate Central

View threats from sea level rise and storm surge for any coastal town or city in the contiguous United States. The site's Risk Finder interface offers additional analyses for selected states.
