BIG BAGS USA® Construction Barriers Can Help with Bridge Projects
The Missouri Department of Transportation is constantly working to improve transportation throughout the state. Not only are they working to improve roadways, but also bridges. Bridge maintenance and reconstruction can be a difficult task. Dewatering projects are typically invovled and that's where BIG BAGS USA® can help!
A project to construct a new Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles counties is underway. A total of $125 million has been allocated for the project. The westbound Daniel Boone Bridge was built in the mid-1930s, making it nearly 80 years old. It was not designed for interestate level traffic and has reached a point where it needs regualr preventative mainenance. Moreover, it has 3 narrow lanes that often get congested during peak travel times. The new bridge will be built upstream from the existing 2 bridges. Eastbound traffic will use the new bridge, while the westbound traffic will shift to the current eastbound Daniel Boone Bridge. Traffic on the new eastbound bridge should be possible by Spring 2015, with all traffic in final position in late 2015. In 2016, the 1935 westbound bridge will be removed.

MoDOT is currently in the process of replacing the I-70 bridges over Manchester Trafficway, the Blue River and the adjacent rail yard. Construction began in February 2014 and will continue through December 15, 2015. The current I-70 bridges were built in the late 1950s and they now require frequent maintenance and extensive repairs, causing motorists further delays. This is a $63 million project.

The Columbia I-70 Bridges Project is an $18 million project to replace three bridges over local streets in Columbia, Missouri. The Interstate 70 bridges cross over Business Loop 70/West Boulevard, Garth Avenue, and MO Route 763/Rangeline Street. MoDOT will hire a Design-Build contractor to replace the 3 bridges. The project is set to start in Fall of 2015 with a completion date of October 1, 2016. Details on the bridge designs and the construction schedule and traffic impacts will be available once the best value contractor is selected in early summer 2015.

U.S. 69 Bridges
Crews are set to detonate the southern portions of the Fairfax Bridge truss spans over the river tomorrow, January 24. MoDOT will replace the U.S. 69 Bridges over the Missouri River between Platte County, MO and Wyandotte County, KS. This replacement project is programmed for a total of $79 million. The Kansas Department of Transportation will be splitting the cost with Missouri. Construction will begin this fall and the new bridge will be open to traffic in December 2016.
Why do these bridges need to be reconstructed?
The Fairfax Bridge on southbound Route 69 was built in 1933, while Platte Purchase Bridge on northbound Route 69 was built in 1957. Both of these bridges were built to accomodate the type, size and weight of vehicles at that time. With the high volume and heavy weight limits of truck traffic within that heavy industrial zone today, those bridges cannot accomodate the needs of the area. Narrow lanes and load limitations restrict the use of these bridges by overweight and oversized vehicles. Also, due to the age of these bridges, both structures require frequent maintenance and costly extensive repairs, causing motorists further delay.
