Living and Working Behind a Levee

What You Need to Know to Protect You, Your Family, Your Home and Your Business

Unique flood risks are associated with levees. While levees do reduce the risk of flooding, they do not prevent it. Therefore, living near a levee doesn't guarantee your home's protection. Levees do fail on occasion, so it's important that communities near levees understand the risk, learn the facts and be aware of steps that can be taken to protect their families and businesses from the threat of flooding.

Levee Risk

While thousands of miles of levee systems have been built across the country to help contain or control the flow of water to reduce flood risks, not all these levees are alike. Some levees around residential areas were originally built long ago to protect farmland. Other levees in urban areas were designed to reduce the impacts of flooding - but only for certain sized flooding events.

Overtime, levees can deteriorate and must be maintained to retain their effectiveness. When levees fail or are overtopped, the results can be catastrophic. In fact, the flood damage can actually exceed what could have occurred if the levee had never been built. For more information about the risks of flooding related to levees, check out this brochure titled, "So, You Live Behind a Levee!

Levee Facts

Here are 3 essential facts that you need to know in regards to levees:

1. Flooding WILL Happen.

Eventually, at some point in time, all rivers, streams and lakes will flood. Whether it's just a small amount of water or a major flooding situation, it can and will happen. This means that all levees will be called upon to combat floodwaters at some point. (I mean that's what they were built for, right?)

2. No Levee is Flood-Proof.

As we stated before, no levee can completely eliminate flood risk. Levees are generally designed to control floodwater up to a certain amount. If the floodwaters exceed that level, the levee can be overtopped. In addition, flooding can also damage levees, causing floodwaters to actually flow through an opening or a breach.

3. Now is the Time to Take Action and Responsibility.

If you live behind a levee, you're personally responsible for knowing and understanding the threat you face from possible flooding. Don't assume that others around you are watching out for you - take flood preparation into your own hands. Take action now by purchasing flood insurance, developing an evacuation plan, flood-proofing your home and reporting any problems that you see. The sooner you act, the better off you'll be when the next flood occurs.

How Big Bags USA Can Help

In the event of possible levee over topping, Big Bags USA® flood barrier systems can easily add up to an additional 6 ft. with no necessary preparations. In addition, our large polypropylene sandbags can be used to protect homes and buildings located behind the levee. That way if water does get through, you're protected from flooding. Our flood barrier systems can be used in a variety of flood & water control situations!

Big Bags USA® flood barriers provide lightening fast flood protection at a fraction of the costs normally associated with rapid deployed systems. One five bag system can be placed and filled by two men in less than 10 minutes. That's equal to 15 lineal foot every 10 minutes. There's no sandbag deployment method that equals the speed in which a Big Bags USA® barrier can be placed. Give us a call at 800-337-0537 for more information about our protective flood barriers.
