FEMA Releases 2018-2022 Strategic Plan

Last month, FEMA released its 2018-2022 Strategic Plan. This plan seeks to unify and further professionalize emergency management across the country, helping build a stronger agency and a more resilient nation. Keep reading to learn more about this new 5-year plan.

2018-2022 Strategic Plan

When disaster strikes, FEMA cannot succeed alone. The agency needs to work in coordination with is partners and stakeholders to ensure that response and recovery is federally coordinated, state managed and locally executed. The formation of this strategic plan strives to rally all stakeholders and the agency around the three goals of preparedness, catastrophic readiness and reducing complexity. Everyone must work together through this strategy to help people before, during and after disasters to achieve our vision of a more prepared and resilient nation. This strategic plan outlines 3 ambitious, but achievable goals for the next 5 years:

1. Build a Culture of Preparedness

Every segment of our society, from individual to government, industry to philanthropy, must be encouraged and empowered with the information it needs to prepare for the inevitable impacts of future disasters.

2. Ready the Nation for Catastrophic Disasters

FEMA will work with its partners across all levels of government to strengthen partnerships and access new sources of scalable capabilities to quickly meet the needs of overwhelming incidents.

3. Reduce the Complexity of FEMA

FEMA must continue to be responsible stewards of the resources it's entrusted to administer. They must also do everything that they can to leverage data to drive decision-making, and reduce the administrative and bureaucratic burdens that impede impacted individuals and communities from quickly receiving the assistance they need.

These goals and objectives reflect the recommendations and perspectives from conversations with disaster survivors and communities, and from what FEMA learned from the recent historic disaster season.

2017 Historic Disaster Season

In 2017, the United States experienced a historic year of weather and climate disasters. In total, we were impacted by 16 separate billion-dollar disaster events. More notable than the high frequency of these events was the cumulative cost, which exceeded $300 billion in 2017, a new U.S. annual record.

The 2018 Season So Far

As of April 6, 2018, there have been 3 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States. These events include 1 severe storm event and 2 winter storm events. Now is the time to prepare for what's still to come this year. We have spring flooding risks to watch out for and the Atlantic Hurricane Season is quickly approaching.
