Hurricane Season Has Arrived!

It's hurricane season again, and now's the time to start preparing for major tropical storms that could come our way. The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1st to November 30th. However, the peak months for hurricanes are August through early October. Whipping winds, torrential downpours, power outages and flooding are likely in our country's future. Keeping reading to learn more about tropical storms, hurricanes and preparing for the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Tropical Storms and Hurricanes

When a tropical cyclone's sustained winds reach 39-73 mph, it is considered a tropical storm. It then gets a name from the list put out by the World Meteorological Organization. Once sustained winds reach 74 to 95 mph, that storm becomes a hurricane. At this point, scientists use a 1-5 scale known as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale to classify hurricane strength, with category 1 being the least severe hurricanes and category 5 being the strongest. According to NASA, hurricanes are the most violent storms on earth.
