Big Bags USA® FAQs Answered - Part 1
While protecting property from flooding with sandbags is not a new concept, the Big Bags USA® Flood Barrier is! Unlike traditional sandbags, this large sandbag system provides fast and easy flood protection. Below we discuss some of the most frequently asked questions we get about the Big Bags USA® Flood Barrier System.
Big Bags USA® is a system for protecting against flood waters. The 5-bag system opens up like an accordion to a length of 15 feet. They stand 40 inches tall. Once open, the connected bags remain standing so they can be filled with sand by machinery. The Big Bags USA® systems are a simple and cost effective solution for flood protection.
The best way to fill Big Bags USA® Flood Barriers is NOT by filling them one at a time, this can cause the bags to bulge. Instead, we recommend filling each bag with about 8-10 inches of sand before filling them all the way to the top. The bags can be filled using a variety of equipment including a front loader, excavator, crane and bucket or cement mixer. The front loader is the favored option for both speed and efficiency of filling.
Each 5-bag system connects to the next system with 3/4 to 1 inch wood screws inserted on-site once the flood barrier systems are opened and prior to filling. The screws are only to hold each sandbags system to the next as they are being filled.
Our flood barriers are designed to make it easy to create angles and corners when needed. You just need to make sure the systems are snug against each other prior to filling, and a water-tight seal is created. Encircling an area, equipment or building is a strategic way to utilize our barrier system if flood water cannot be stopped or diverted in a given area.
Once you open a system off the pallet, it can easily be positioned and moved before filling. With the use of a couple extra u-frames, the systems can be placed at a 90 degree angle, or a 45 degree angle. You then have the ability to screw the systems together at that angle. This allows the system to be used around buildings, etc.
The Big Bags USA® Flood Barrier Systems can be stacked in a pyramid formation to achieve vertical height. Pyramid stacking requires an extra row on the bottom for every row you place to achieve vertical height. You can use our patented Transforming Spreader Bar to lift a filled system and place it on top of another one.
Our systems can effectively be used almost anywhere! The flexible design allows our sandbag system to conform to any sub-surface, making a water-tight seal. Wherever a protective flood barrier is needed, tops of levees, in the streets, surrounding a building, sides of hills, over sewers, etc., the Big Bags USA® barrier can adapt to the topography.
The "water-side" of the Big Bags USA® system is coated with a water-proof resin so water does not enter the sandbags. If water did happen to enter the flood barrier from the top, the other sides and bottom are not coated to allow water to flow out of the sandbags and prevent sand from being washed out. If water does not enter the barrier, then the sand is uncontaminated and re-usable.
There are many advantages of using the Big Bags USA® Flood Barrier System over traditional sandbags. The main advantage is the lack of labor involved with assembly and filling. Other advantages include the speed with which you can protect an area from flooding, and the cost savings compared to other flood protection products available.
