Big Bags USA® FAQs Answered - Part 2
Big Bags USA® is the fastest deployed barrier anywhere! In today's blog, we continue answering some of the most commonly asked questions about our flood barrier systems and our patented transforming spreader bar that can be used to deploy them.
When empty, a single 5-bag system weighs 50 lbs. This is within the safe handling guidelines for one person. When filled, each system weighs 15,000 lbs. You can use our Transforming Spreader Bar to lift a system once it's filled.
The Transforming Spreader Bar is our innovative solution for deployment of protective flood barriers in areas that are considered dangerous or areas with terrain issues that prevent standard deployment of the Big Bags USA® sandbags system. It was designed with versatility, simplicity and speed in mind. The product is manufactured in the US out of high strength reinforced steel.
The Transforming Spreader Bar quickly converts from a single axle pull behind trailer to a Big Bags USA® flood barrier lifting system. The trailer hitch and axle components are removed from the main lifting system with minimal effort by removing the locking pins and safety bolts. Once removed, the lifting system may then be attached to the machine of your choice using only standard equipment. Alone, the main spreader bar is capable of lifting 3 filled bags, however, by attaching the extensions with the lock pins and safety bolts, the lift is now capable of lifting 4 and 5 bags or one Big Bags USA® system at once. The system is picked up by its loops and is secured by its own weight. Therefore, no special equipment or tools are necessary. Once you have positioned the Big Bags USA® flood barrier system in place, there is no need for a ground crew to detach the system, simply toggle the spreader bar lifting device and the break free design effortlessly releases from the deployed sandbags system for a true and accurate deployment of our flood barrier.
The first feature of the spreader bar is the main blue bar, which can lift 3 bags by itself. Clevis clamps are placed at all 4 corners to secure the hooks and the cables for the crane to lift the bar. The red bars are extension pieces that allow for the system to lift 5 bags at a time or one full Big Bags USA® system. The hooks underneath are how you pick up the bags, by their loops. Each unit also comes with magnetic lights so that you can trailer it. It comes with it's own axle and hitch that are easily removed as well.
Big Bags USA® has a life span of 25 years when stored inside. While deployed, the protective flood barrier can have a life of up to 4 years, depending on the conditions. Direct sunlight, over extended time, will weaken the polypropylene material.
Cleanup is quick with the Big Bags USA® protective flood barrier system. The bags can be emptied either on-site or lifted individually by forklift or pay loader. The sandbags are dumped by placing individual sandbags into a pay loader, lifting the bucket 8-10 feet, and then tilting the bucket forward until the sandbag turns upside down and falls top down. The sandbags can then either be lifted off the sand pile or will need the bucket to push or pull it to loosen the sandbags from the sand pile. If the flood barrier will be reused, then a staging location must be available for washing and drying the sandbags. If sandbags are to be destroyed, they can be incinerated as there are no toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing.
Absolutely! The Big Bags USA® flood barrier system can be reused if emptied without damage, washed and stored properly. Additional wood u-frames may be required to be inserted, as they may be destroyed during the emptying of the sand from the sandbags.
We've made improvements to our shipping! By stacking a second set of systems with the bag loops upside down on top of the first set already on the pallet, we can get more protection on just one pallet. Now, we are getting 210 linear feet of flood protection on a pallet instead of just 105 liner feet.
Big Bags USA® flood control systems provide lightening fast flood protection at a fraction of the cost of regular sandbags. No other sandbag deployment method equals the speed of deployment possible with Big Bags USA®.
