Preparing for Flooding and a Pandemic

Nothing stops Mother Nature from those spring rains - not even a pandemic. However, with the spread of COVID-19 across the country, it’s going to make the flood season increasingly more challenging for many areas. We’ve covered the predictions for this spring when it comes to flooding, and things are looking pretty wet already, you can refer to our past blog, 2020 NOAA Flood Outlook for more details about that.

There are so many communities who have been hit by flooding this year including Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Ohio. Not to mention, there are so many communities along the Mississippi River who are still recovering from last year’s catastrophic flooding. There are many researchers with the Union of Concerned Scientists who compared coronavirus projection models from Columbia University with NOAA’s most recent spring flood forecast, and the projections were alarming, to say the least. It showed that many communities are most likely to be hit with both the global pandemic AND spring flooding between now and May 31st. This could make for a very tense situation for so many communities, and Big Bags USA wants to see you as prepared as you can be for this situation.

Ways You Can Prepare

  • Sign up for your community’s warning system
  • Monitor potential signs if your area is prone to flash flooding
  • Learn and prepare for an evacuation route - and keep coronavirus rules in mind as many places are required to keep less than 10 people and a distance of 6 feet is also favorable.
  • Gather supplies in case you have to leave immediately
  • Review your flood insurance policy
  • Put important documents in a waterproof container
  • Move valuables to higher levels
  • Be aware of the risk of electrocution. Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water

Preparing for a Pandemic:


  • Store additional supplies of food and water
  • Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure you have a continuous supply
  • Keep nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand
  • Get copies of health records from doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and other sources and store them in a waterproof container
  • Keep distance from others if you are experiencing symptoms
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
  • Wash your hands
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
