The 411 On Missouri River Flooding

Spring is always an interesting season - and by interesting we mean that it keeps you on your toes! Flooding has been a huge issue for many areas of the Midwest over the last few years, but for those along the Missouri River, this is an understatement. If you live or have land along the Missouri River, coming up with a flood protection plan is going to be essential. Here are a few things that are being said about flooding along the Missouri River in 2020 and how Big Bags USA is prepared to help these areas out.

Flood Outlook Along the Missouri River for 2020

The National Weather Service has shown that spring has been kind so far. However, there is still a high flood risk for areas in eastern South Dakota, eastern North Dakota, eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, and eastern Kansas and Missouri because of the soil saturation levels. Thankfully the lack of rain and the warm temperatures are allowing for gradual snowmelt across these areas.

Thankfully, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has changed its forecast for how much water will flow down the Missouri River this year, but even still, it’s expected to be a wet year, and we all know how quickly things can change. Even with mild weather, there are still some areas that will see flooding.

The catch is that many levees are still in need of repair after the massive flooding that was experienced in 2019, specifically in Kansas and Missouri. In the coming months, if we see significant rainfall, this could really cause some issues, specifically because the corps could increase releases from upstream dams on the river to prevent the reservoirs from overflowing.

The Corps has now estimated that 2020 runoff with being 35.5 million acre-feet, and that could cause it to rank in the top 10% of the wettest years in the past 122 years. While this is down slightly from last month’s prediction of 36.9 million acre-feet, it could still cause an impact. For perspective, in 2011 there were 61 million acre-feet, and in 2019, there was 60.9 million acre-feet.

A Few Considerations

While all of this sounds like really good news, there are some curveballs being tossed into the mix. There are several rivers that flow into the Missouri River, and they remain high. In addition, the mountain snowpack has yet to melt and flow into the river, and the mountain snowpack is slightly above average for this year, so far.

Why Big Bags USA Can Help

The systems can effectively be used almost anywhere. The flexible design of no rigid bottom structure allows the Big Bags USA sandbags to conform to any sub-surface, making a water-tight seal. Thus, wherever a protective flood barrier is needed, tops of levees, in the streets, surrounding a building, sides of hills, over sewers, Big Bags USA sandbags can adapt to the topography. In addition, our barriers work wonderfully on top of levees because you can create a pyramid shape to give the best defense where the most water pressure will be located - at the bottom.

There are many protective flood barrier products on the market to stop, prevent and divert the flow of water and land containment. While many of these products work well, we feel it is best to identify any unique demands of the situation and consider cost, time, resources, length of deployment, clean-up cost, and finally the end-use or reuse of your flood barrier product.

The benefits of using Big Bags USA sandbags barrier are many and varied. The most notable is the price comparison. We offer the high-quality Big Bags USA sandbags flood barrier at a great economic price with the most affordable price per linear foot. Another highly notable benefit to Big Bags USA sandbags protective flood barrier is the reduced amount of resources that are needed to deploy the systems.
