Current Flood Report - August 2020

Flooding is an issue no matter what time of the year, but August has some unique flooding situations that come up. June through November is the Atlantic hurricane season, and we aren’t even at the peak of the season. With many major hurricanes and storms coming through the nation, we wanted to take a moment to highlight what is happening around the country to our neighbors, family, and friends.

Hurricane Laura's winds batter Louisiana, killing six

"Winds of up to 150mph (240km/h) caused severe damage, with power cuts to more than half a million homes and a chemical fire from an industrial plant.

But the feared 20ft (6m) storm surge was avoided as the hurricane, the state's biggest, tracked further east.
Laura has now been downgraded to tropical storm status.

It has since crossed into Arkansas. At 19:00 local time (00:00 GMT) on Thursday the National Hurricane Center said the storm had weakened to maximum sustained winds of 40mph (65km/h), but was still bringing heavy rainfall."

'Destruction everywhere': Photos show Hurricane Laura flooded streets, shredded buildings

"Hurricane Laura hit near the border of Texas and Louisiana as a Category 4 storm early Thursday, ripping off roofs, flooding streets and knocking out power to more than half a million people.

It's the strongest storm to hit the U.S. this year, leading thousands of residents to evacuate the area ahead of its landfall. Forecasters warned the storm was capable of catastrophic damage. At least four deaths have been reported in Louisiana. "

Columbia County officials respond to flooding, advise people to stay home

“COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wis. — Emergency management officials reported widespread flood in the northern half of Columbia County on Thursday night.

Officials said the worst of the flooding is in Portage, where some roads have at least two feet of flooding.

They are advising people to stay home unless they absolutely have to go somewhere. In other parts of the county, officials recommend people drive with caution due to downed trees. There is no reported damage to homes or businesses at this time."

Flash flood warnings issued for portions of Arkansas; tornado warnings end as thousands lack power

“The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for an area including Strawberry, Lynn and Smithville until 9:15 p.m. A tornado warning also remained in effect until 9 p.m. for western Craighead County in northeast Arkansas."
