2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season Prediction

As you may know, the Atlantic hurricane season of 2020 was record-breaking. The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st to November 30th, and while that seems like a long way away, preparations for such potentially catastrophic events can take months of planning by itself. Preliminary Outlook for the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season

In an average year, the hurricane seasons typically consists of about 12 named storms. Six of those becoming actual hurricanes and three of them being catastrophic in nature. To give a little context, a named storm is classified by having winds of 39mph or above, hurricanes having winds exceeding 74mph, and major hurricanes between a catagory.3-5 having wind speeds over 111mph.

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season had 30 named storms. Thirteen of which developed into hurricanes, and six of those intensified into a major hurricane. The United States was impacted by 12 of those named storms, exceeding the record set in 1916! And based on future predictions from leading meteorologists and weather experts, it's looking as though another above-active year is imminent and the storms are only getting stronger.

"The first preliminary outlook for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season reveals that 2021 is likely to be another active year, according to a new outlook published Thursday. The discussion, led by Phil Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University specializing in Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts, examined the factors which will likely determine next year’s Atlantic basin hurricane activity. While this research is far ahead of next year’s season, “early indications are that 2021 could potentially be another active season,” Klotzbach told FOX TV Stations. “Right now, we have about a 50% chance of having an above-normal hurricane season. The outlook was assessed using two primary physical parameters: the strength of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation (AMO) and the phase of ENSO."
