Flood Report: February 2021

Even in frigid temperatures, the risk of flooding, while not necessarily high, is still prevalent. Meaning that it is always essential to have flood mitigation plans in place and the resources to counter any flooding. Big Bags USA's flood barrier system is just the tool to save your community from flooding, year after year. Here's a look into the flooding risks and predictions that came to light this month.

Feb. 12th: 2021 Flood Outlook: Mississippi River risk lower than past few years, snow a concern for smaller rivers

"The National Weather Service released the first Flood Outlook for 2021 on Feb. 11. Fortunately, the Mississippi River isn't much concern at the moment! Our primary concerns this year lie with our smaller rivers, especially the Rock River. This year, snow is going to be the kicker.“The Rock River watershed, for instance, is probably one of our higher risked rivers this spring because a lot of that watershed has a lot of snowpack," Brooks said. "If you go up into northern Illinois and Wisconsin, there’s snow in that entire watershed, so that one is one of our primary concerns."

Feb. 16th: Ice jam in Spearfish Creek leads to flood advisory until 11 a.m. Friday

"An unusual winter phenomenon is causing Spearfish Creek to freeze from the bottom up, pushing water out of the creek bed and prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory until 11 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service said Tuesday morning that an ice jam was causing minor flooding due to the recent cold snap that has featured temperatures well below zero since Thursday throughout the Black Hills."

Feb. 25th: STRONGER LA NINA COULD MEAN WET PLANTING SEASON IN MIDWEST

"Brownfield’s meteorologist says La Nina conditions are expected to wind down in the coming weeks which will mean active spring weather.“Parts of eastern Minnesota, much of Wisconsin, about all into southern and southwestern Illinois, and points onto the east look to be a very active and moisture-laden early spring and summer season,” he says. He says increased severe weather is also possible where it is wet and could likely expand into the Mississippi Valley, Mid-South, and Delta regions."
