Types of Flooding & How Big Bags USA Can Help

Missouri and surrounding areas of the U.S have been experiencing quite the wet climate over the last few weeks. Between the epic floods that happened through the Midwest and upcoming hurricane season, the Big Bags team has been kept busy. We created the fastest to deploy sandbags on the market because we wanted communities to feel safer and be given the best tools to protect themselves. From all of the different types of floods that the area can experience, we want to be there to help through them all. Here are a few different types of flooding, how they affect communities, and how Big Bags USA is specifically designed as the best flood barrier on the market to combat their effects.

Overbank Flooding

This is generally the first thing people think of when they think of “flooding.” Rivers will get filled to capacity because of heavy rains or melting snow, and this water can then affect the areas around it. This is the biggest cause of floods through the Midwest, and it can take DAYS to dissipate. In the flat areas, the water can be slow moving, but in the mountainous areas where water flows together, it can appear to move faster.

Flash Floods

The water from floods can take time to build up, which is good because it can allow an area to prepare for the upcoming water invasion. But there are some types of floods that occur so quickly that you don’t have time to get ready, and they gather steam within as little as six hours. When you think of flash floods, think of rapid rise, fast-moving water. In many cases, it can move at 10 miles an hour and exert the same amount of pressure as wind gusts of 270 mph. Flash floods aren’t just dangerous because of the water, either they also carry debris which can cause damage to structures and injure people.

Ice Jam Flooding

Okay, so we may not be worried about this type of flooding right now as we are embarking on the hottest part of summer (in July!), but they are still worth knowing about. When it does get cold, the bodies of water are often frozen, and then heavy precipitation can cause chunks of ice to push together and create a dam - this then results in ice jam flooding. Water will begin to oil up behind the dam, spilling over, and eventually breaking the wall causing fast-moving water to head downstream. Not only is this “flash flood” effect dangerous, but it also drags huge chunks of ice with it as well, which can have damaging results.

Coastal Flooding

This is the one to pay attention to right now (July 2019) as we find ourselves at the beginning of hurricane season. Coastal flooding occurs along the edges of oceans and is driven by storm surges and wave damage. You will normally find this type of flooding connected to hurricanes, tsunamis, or tropical storms. As the hurricane moves closer to land and picks up more and more force, waves will start to break along the shoreline and assault beaches and structures with terrible results. Big Bags USA can help communities prepare for flooding due to hurricanes. Our barriers work wonderfully on beaches as well as a reinforcement to levees.

Engineering Issues

Finally, flooding could because of manmade issues. This could include weakly constructed dams, levees bursting under pressure, and more. When these types of things happen, it will create a flash flood effect in the regions downstream and are just as disastrous as a naturally occurring storm.

Big Bags USA flood control systems and flood barrier systems provide lightning fast flood protection at a fraction of the cost of regular sandbags. One system is 36” wide, 15’ long, and 40” tall. One five-bag system can be placed and filled by two men in less than 10 minutes. That’s equal to 15 linear feet every ten minutes. No other sandbag deployment method equals the speed of deployment possible with Big Bags USA. We are proud to have earned our rank in the Top Ten Flood Barriers list! Visit our website to learn more about fast flood barriers to see how they are deployed. We want to protect you from Mother Nature to the best of our ability, and Big Bags USA flood barriers are built just for that!
