Record-Shattering Water Levels in 2020

Image
2019 brought some crazy weather to the Midwest, as we saw extreme flooding wiping through the states. From snowmelt in the north to torrential rainstorms in the middle states, and everything running down south - it was a really rough year for so many of our American neighbors. Unfortunately, it looks like 2020 isn’t going to bring much relief when it comes to areas around the Great Lakes. USA Today has recently reported that the water levels could be EVEN HIGHER than this past record-shattering spring and summer. Here are a few of the forecasts that have been predicted, as well as how your community can prepare with strong and FAST flood protection. The 2020 Flood Forecast According to measurements by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers , every Great Lake, and Lake St. Clair measurement was well above average for the levels in October. In fact, they were almost three feet higher on connected lakes Michigan and Huron, and on Lake St. Clair. Lake Erie was also 29 inches above lon...

Can Forest Fires Increase Your Flood Risk?

Image
Flooding can be one of the most common and costly hazards from nature in the nation. The causes can be from heavy rain, snowmelt, thunderstorms, hurricanes, or tropical storms - but the results can be devastating. One thing that many may have not realized was that flash floods are also common after wildfires. As we come to the end of the wildfire season, it’s still just as important as ever to remember how fires and flooding work hand in hand to create a double whammy. Why Is The Risk Increased? Did you know that an area remains at risk for flooding for up to five years after a wildfire? The reason behind this is because large-scale wildfires dramatically alter the terrain and ground conditions. Where vegetation would absorb water, a wildfire leaves the ground charred, barren, and unable to absorb water. This creates an environment that is prime for flooding. In addition to flooding being a common after-effect, it’s also often more severe because debris and ash that is left f...

The Aftereffects of Flooding

Image
When in the midst of a flooding catastrophe, many of the experiences are not a surprise. The power may be out, the roads could be blocked off, and businesses will probably be closed up until the floodwaters recede. However, what you may not consider is the after-effects of the floods. We’re not talking about a few weeks later, we’re talking about MONTHS later. In Spring 2019, the Midwest experienced catastrophic flooding, and actually was one of the worst that had been seen in a long while. The effects of this flooding can’t always be seen even yet, but we wanted to talk about the economic effects that do show up at some point when such a large area is flooding, especially when it’s field lands. Tiered Effects From Flooding Several tiers affect an area when flooding occurs. The primary effects are due to direct contact with floodwater and can include massive amounts of erosion, water flooding homes and businesses, flooding farmlands with the loss of crops, livestock, and pets, ...

Assistance Grants for Floods and What You Need to Know About It

Flooding situations can be devastating to communities and the people in them. In many cases, it can be hard to know how to handle them both before and after, especially when the only thing you want to do is find a new normal. Instead, you are left with piles of paperwork, empty homes, and possibly even more bills than you can imagine. At Big Bags USA®, we created our affordable flood barrier s because we wanted to help communities band together and protect themselves with something even more efficient than just sandbags. This topic can feel incredibly heavy and overwhelming, so we are going to pull out the basics, let you know about the deadlines and cut off dates, and try to make it as simple to understand as possible. What Is Haz...
