The Aftereffects of Flooding

When in the midst of a flooding catastrophe, many of the experiences are not a surprise. The power may be out, the roads could be blocked off, and businesses will probably be closed up until the floodwaters recede. However, what you may not consider is the after-effects of the floods. We’re not talking about a few weeks later, we’re talking about MONTHS later. In Spring 2019, the Midwest experienced catastrophic flooding, and actually was one of the worst that had been seen in a long while. The effects of this flooding can’t always be seen even yet, but we wanted to talk about the economic effects that do show up at some point when such a large area is flooding, especially when it’s field lands.

Tiered Effects From Flooding

Several tiers affect an area when flooding occurs. The primary effects are due to direct contact with floodwater and can include massive amounts of erosion, water flooding homes and businesses, flooding farmlands with the loss of crops, livestock, and pets, and even toxic pollutants from floodwaters carrying garbage and debris.

Secondary effects are those that occur because of the primary effects, and these include disruption of services. This means that drinking water supplies may become polluted, gas and electrical services could be disrupted, and transportation systems may be canceled. These all work together to increase a shortage in food and clean-up supplies.

Finally, there are tertiary (long-term effects) from flooding, and those are the ones that we want to expand on further.

Tertiary Effects From Flooding

The tertiary effects are the long term effects that come from flooding, after experiencing the primary and secondary, these are the ones that have the longest-lasting impact on a community.

River Changes

Water is a powerful force. It can sweep through an area wreaking havoc, and then leave it in a completely different way than it was. The location of river channels may change as a result of flooding. However, as new channels develop, old channels can remain dry. This doesn’t seem like a huge problem, but any time the landscape changes, there are other changes on the horizon.

Farmlands Destroyed

This is a challenge to determine because while sediment deposited by flooding may completely destroy farmlands, their crops, and their livestock, it can also be a benefit. When silt is deposited by floodwaters, it could actually help increase agricultural productivity. In the end, flooding is a double-edged sword.

Job Loss

When there is a disruption of services, it instantly creates a job loss, as do the destruction of businesses. As with the farmlands issue, we also see an increase in some jobs through flooding as well. Construction companies may benefit as their services are required to help rebuild or repair the flood damage.

Insurance Rates Increase

This really shouldn’t come as a surprise, but for many, it could be a huge surprise. If this has been the first experience you have encountered with flooding in your area in a long time, or at all, the insurance rates could go up, and be quite shocking.

Price Increases Later Down the Road

This can be a shocking experience when flooding has been an old memory - or at least it feels like it. However, this won’t just affect the area that received the flooding. Especially when farmlands are flooded you will find that prices increase not just on the item that was ruined by the flood, but by any livestock that ate it as well. Beef prices may skyrocket, as well as the common corn and soybeans.

Prepare and Protect

In communities that are prone to flooding in the past, stockpiling of BIG BAGS USA flood barriers in strategic locations can greatly reduce response time. The BIG BAGS USA five-connected bulk bag flood barrier systems should be located near public works facilities and be part of the community "action" plan., The systems would be pulled out and set up quickly when needed.

By being prepared to protect you and your communities' property, this should provide comfort, knowing that you have some tools for protection in place before flooding. If you are doing all that you can to minimize damages to your property, then you are in the top 10%.
